One of the best movies of this type I have seen.
This video follows several California high schools as they prepare for a Shakespeare festival. As I viewed the video, I couldn't help getting caught up in the compelling personal stories of the students highlighted. There is an interesting debate about the presentations -- whether or not theses Shakespearean scenes should be performed in a traditional "straight" way, or whether contemporizing the Bard is more effective for high schoolers. Each philosophy is expressed persuasively. I found Shakespeare High to be a perfect blend of touching personal stories and effective scenes of the competition itself.
Inspiring Film / Documentary About a Very Artistic Set of Young People
As I have said before, if only programs with such a positive and inspirational message could make it to mainstream programming. If you like Glee: The Complete Second Season, or some of the milder competition shows like American Idol, you're sure to enjoy this program.
It also serves to renew your faith in the youth of America, and in the ability of our schools to come together for the sake of the KIDS! If there was drama and/or politics, they certainly were excluded from this program, and that's a good thing. The film focuses on the challenging path students take to participate in a theatrical interpretation of Shakespeare. Dozens of schools throughout California participate, but only a few take home the awards. Considering the sheer number of students, the film does a good job of keeping the story moving and entertaining, especially the second half.
